Known as K.T.
K.T. was born on October 27, 1988 in Montgomery, Alabama
K.T. was born 2 1/2 months early. He weighed 2 lbs 7 ozs. After he was born, bleeding around his brain caused severe brain damage. He was diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy. A couple of days later, he had to have a colostomy because his bile stopped working.
K.T. weight decreased to 1 lb 12 ozs before he started to gain weight. About 2 1/2 months later they let him come home at 4 1/2 lbs. His entire body could fit in my hand.
All of his beautiful black curly hair had been shaved off his head for the several IV sites he had to have during his time in NICU. He was still a beautiful baby.
I was told he would never walk, or even roll over by himself, that he may need a tube to feed through. He may not grow or have ongoing seizures. Many times I was told he may not live, and if he did, he would always be dependent on others for his care for the rest of his life.

He loved the water. He swam once a week at school, it was the best part of his week. He would crawl to the tub and get in it just to take a bath (making a stop at the toilet to put his face in it). At age 11 he was like a big baby, our big baby.

What is Cerebral Palsy?
Cerebral Palsy is a term used to describe a group of chronic conditions affecting body movement and muscle conditions. It is caused by damage to one or more specific areas of the brain. Cerebral Palsy itself is not progressive (I.e., it does not get worse); however, secondary conditions can develop which may get better over time, get worse or remain the same. Cerebral Palsy is not communicable. It is not a disease and should never be referred to as such. Although Cerebral Palsy is not "Curable" in the accepted sense, training & therapy can help improve function.

His father supported him without complaint. He carried him up and down the stairs every day. He could make K.T. laugh every time. When his father came into the room, he knew he could play "way back", even at 120 lbs. When he was smaller, Jeff would put K.T. in his lap facing him, throw him back quickly, then pull him up. Every time he did this he would say???.way back! K.T. loved it and would laugh so hard. He never stopped playing that with him no matter how big he got.
